South African Pattern No. 9

South African Pattern No. 9

South African Pattern No. 9 Bayonet

Unique socket with blade bayonet for use with the Lee-Enfield No. 4 .303 caliber rifles.

The South African blade differs from the British No. 9 Mk. I bayonet (shown at left above British pattern No. 9 for comparison).

According to Skennerton, these bayonets were made up in the 1960's using blades from FN-made Uzi submachine gun bayonets (known in So. Africa as the S1 bayonet). The blade was attached to the socket with two steel pins. The scabbard is an unaltered Uzi (S1) scabbard.
ARMSCOR is a State-owned arms manufacturer in South Africa.

R1

Early tubular socket bayonet for the FN-FAL assault rifles, made by FN in Belgium for South Africa.

The quality of manufacture is very high, distinctly higher than the later M1965 example shown under Belgium.

According to Skennerton, only early bayonets were marked with the rifle's serial number (as is this example). Serial numbering was discontinued by the South Africans very early in the FAL's service life.

R1 bayonets were also made by ARMSCOR in South Africa, but the quality was lower and the S.A.-made examples were marked with the South African "M" inside a "U" property mark. This example is not so marked.

Later, 3rd Type, nylon scabbard with teardrop-shaped frog stud.
