M1874 Peabody

For use on the M1874 Peabody-Martini rifle, produced in the U.S. for the Turkish government.

These rifles and bayonets were made by the Providence Tool Company, Providence, RI, in the 1870s.

This example has been converted by the Turks into a dress saber, by filling the mounting slot and press stud, nickle-plating the entire bayonet, and replacing the original gutta-percha grips with rosewood inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

This bayonet is pictured in the July 2006 revision of the CD-ROM book, Observations on Turkish Bayonets, by Dennis Ottobre.
